For most trips: a 7–10 GB regional plan beats a single-country plan.
Single-country eSIMs often look cheaper per-GB on a spec sheet, but regional plans (for example, a multi-country Europe plan covering Bulgaria) almost always win on flexibility, carrier choice, and what happens if your flight gets re-routed. If you're staying in Bulgaria for more than 10 days or doing heavy work, a single-country 20 GB plan is still worth it.

A1, Yettel and Vivacom cover Bulgaria, and the network quality surprises people — Sofia has dense 5G, and 4G reaches the Black Sea resorts, the Rila and Pirin mountains and the main motorways reliably. Bulgaria also has unusually cheap domestic data, which feeds through into competitive travel eSIM pricing.

Where coverage gets tricky
The two dominant trip types pull in different directions. Black Sea beach holidays around Sunny Beach and Varna are low-data affairs with good resort wifi. Hiking and skiing in Rila, Pirin and Bansko is where a working connection matters, and where coverage thins out above the tree line.

Bulgaria is an EU member, so EU roaming applies and visitors from within the EU do not need a travel eSIM at all. Bulgaria completed its Schengen accession for land borders in 2025, but Schengen membership and roaming rules are separate things — the roaming benefit came with EU membership, not Schengen.

What to buy for Bulgaria
Three gigabytes covers a beach week comfortably. For a mountain or multi-city trip, 5–10 GB is the sensible range. Bulgaria is one of the cheaper European destinations for data, so paying up for a larger bundle costs little — if you are undecided between two sizes here, take the larger one.
Start with trip length. For a 3–5 day trip, a 3 GB plan is plenty if you're mostly on hotel or cafe Wi-Fi. For 7–14 days of real use — maps, rideshare, translation, messaging — aim for 7–10 GB and don't overbuy; unused data expires on most plans.
Then look at the provider's network partners inside Bulgaria. A plan that rides on the country's #1 carrier will have noticeably better rural signal than one that rides on the #3 carrier, even if the advertised speeds look identical. When a physical SIM still wins
If you need a local phone number to receive OTP SMS (banking, Grab, Uber Eats, some hotels), or you're staying longer than 30 days, a local prepaid SIM from a convenience store still beats eSIM on value. For everything else in 2026, eSIM is the default.
Activation tips
- Install the eSIM 24 hours before your flight — activation is instant, but the plan clock usually only starts on first network connection in Bulgaria.
- Label the line "Bulgaria travel" in Settings so you don't accidentally leave it as default after the trip.
- Turn your home line's data roaming OFF; keep it on for calls/SMS only.
- Save the provider's support chat URL offline in case you land without signal.
What is specific to Bulgaria
EU member, so EU SIMs roam free
If you are travelling from elsewhere in the EU, your existing allowance already works. Travel eSIMs are for visitors from outside the bloc.
Data is genuinely cheap here
Bulgarian wholesale data costs are among the lowest in the EU, and travel eSIM pricing reflects that. The gap between a 3 GB and a 10 GB plan is often small enough not to be worth optimising.
Cyrillic road signs outside the cities
Signage switches to Cyrillic away from tourist areas. Live navigation is more useful here than in most of Europe, which argues for a slightly larger data allowance if you are driving.

Do I need an eSIM for Bulgaria?+
Not if you are travelling from another EU country — EU roaming rules mean your domestic allowance works at no extra cost. Visitors from the UK, US and elsewhere outside the EU will want one, and Bulgaria is cheap enough that plans here are good value.
Is coverage good in the Bulgarian mountains?+
Better than expected in the ski resorts — Bansko, Borovets and Pamporovo all have solid 4G. Above the tree line on the Rila and Pirin hiking routes, coverage becomes patchy. Download offline trail maps if you are walking the Seven Rila Lakes or similar.
How much data do I need for a week in Bulgaria?+
Three gigabytes for a Black Sea beach week, five to ten for a driving or mountain trip where you are navigating constantly. Given how cheap Bulgarian data is, sizing up costs very little.
