Single-country eSIMs often look cheaper per-GB on a spec sheet, but regional plans (for example, a multi-country Asia plan covering Maldives) almost always win on flexibility, carrier choice, and what happens if your flight gets re-routed. If you're staying in Maldives for more than 10 days or doing heavy work, a single-country 20 GB plan is still worth it.

Dhiraagu and Ooredoo Maldives split the market, and both have built out coverage far better than a nation of scattered atolls has any right to expect. Malé and the populated islands have 4G and 5G; the resort islands are generally well served because the resorts themselves depend on it.

Where coverage gets tricky
Almost everything about data use here is shaped by resort economics. Resort wifi is usually available but frequently paywalled, tiered, or fast only in the lobby and restaurant areas — and villa wifi is often the weakest. Seaplane transfers, liveaboard diving boats and excursions to uninhabited sandbanks all lose signal entirely.

What to buy for Maldives
Three to five gigabytes covers a standard resort week if wifi is included, since you will be on it most of the time. If your resort charges for wifi or you are on a liveaboard, take 10 GB and use the eSIM as your primary connection — it will still cost less than resort wifi fees. Seaplane transfers are always offline, so download entertainment beforehand.
Start with trip length. For a 3–5 day trip, a 3 GB plan is plenty if you're mostly on hotel or cafe Wi-Fi. For 7–14 days of real use — maps, rideshare, translation, messaging — aim for 7–10 GB and don't overbuy; unused data expires on most plans.
Then look at the provider's network partners inside Maldives. A plan that rides on the country's #1 carrier will have noticeably better rural signal than one that rides on the #3 carrier, even if the advertised speeds look identical. When a physical SIM still wins
If you need a local phone number to receive OTP SMS (banking, Grab, Uber Eats, some hotels), or you're staying longer than 30 days, a local prepaid SIM from a convenience store still beats eSIM on value. For everything else in 2026, eSIM is the default.
Activation tips
- Install the eSIM 24 hours before your flight — activation is instant, but the plan clock usually only starts on first network connection in Maldives.
- Label the line "Maldives travel" in Settings so you don't accidentally leave it as default after the trip.
- Turn your home line's data roaming OFF; keep it on for calls/SMS only.
- Save the provider's support chat URL offline in case you land without signal.

Seaplane transfers are always offline
The transfer from Malé to a resort atoll can take up to an hour with no signal. Download anything you want for the flight in advance.
Liveaboard dive boats have almost no coverage
If you are diving from a liveaboard rather than a resort, expect to be offline for most of the trip regardless of plan. Budget accordingly rather than buying a large bundle you cannot use.

Do I need an eSIM in the Maldives if my resort has wifi?+
It depends entirely on your resort. Some include wifi across the property; others charge per device per day at rates that exceed the cost of a whole travel eSIM. Villa wifi is also commonly weaker than the lobby. Check your booking terms — if wifi is charged or limited, an eSIM is comfortably the cheaper option.
