eSIM for Athens
Short answer
You need a Greece eSIM. If Athens is a stop before island hopping, buy for the ferries — that is where connectivity actually fails.
Greece plans currently start at $0.85 across 6 providers. Compare all 684 plans →
There is no Athens-only eSIM; a Greece plan covers the city and the islands alike. Athens itself is straightforward — good coverage, plenty of wifi, a compact historic centre. The reason to think about data here at all is that most Athens trips are the front half of an island itinerary, and ferry crossings are where a plan gets tested.
How much data do you need in Athens?
| Trip type | Suggested | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Athens city break | 3 GB | Compact centre, dense wifi, good metro coverage. You will not need much. |
| Athens plus islands | 5–10 GB | Ferry timetables, accommodation lookups and island navigation, with less reliable wifi than the mainland. |
| Extended island hopping | 10 GB+ | Smaller Cyclades have thinner coverage and you will lean on offline-capable apps. |
Coverage in Athens
Cosmote, Vodafone Greece and Nova cover Athens densely, and the metro carries signal on the main lines including the airport link. The Acropolis, Plaka and Monastiraki are all well served. Ferry crossings out of Piraeus lose signal in open water, and the smaller Cyclades have thinner coverage than the mainland.
Arriving in Athens
ATH connects to the centre by metro line 3 in around 40 minutes, or the X95 bus. Both have wifi at the airport end, so activating on arrival is easy if you did not do it beforehand.
What catches people out
Greece is in the EU, so EU SIMs roam free
Visitors from other EU countries do not need to buy anything. This is a plan for UK, US and other non-EU arrivals.
Ferry crossings lose signal
Piraeus departures drop out in open water. Download your tickets and accommodation details before boarding rather than planning to retrieve them at sea.
